Inside a Hospital 3D Printing Lab:
Improving Surgical Planning with Patient-Specific Models

Register for On-Demand Webinar

What happens when surgeons, imaging specialists, and hospital leadership bring 3D printing inside the hospital walls? Join Dr. Kanwal Farooqi, pediatric cardiologist at Columbia University Medical Center, for an exclusive look at how her team uses patient-specific anatomical models to change surgical plans, accelerate turnaround, and improve outcomes for children with heart disease.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Case insights: Real-world examples of how 3D models changed surgical approaches and improved patient outcomes in congenital cardiac care.
  • Workflow lessons: Step-by-step look at how imaging → segmentation → print integrates into hospital practice for urgent and complex cases.
  • Strategic perspective: Why leading hospitals are bringing 3D modeling in-house to enhance collaboration, improve patient care, and create sustainable value across their programs.

Associate Professor of Pediatrics | Director of Cardiac 3D Printing Columbia University Medical Center

Dr. Kanwal M. Farooqi is a specialist in the use of advanced imaging techniques for patients with congenital heart disease. Dr. Farooqi’s research focuses on the use of 3D printed and digital cardiac models to improve care for patients with congenital heart disease. She is investigating the utility of 3D printed models for preoperative planning of VAD placement in patients with congenital heart disease and heart failure through a prospective multicenter study funded by the NIH and AHA. Her research also emphasizes improving diagnosis and risk stratification in anomalous aortic origin of the coronary arteries (AAOCA), with the goal of guiding clinical decision-making and long-term outcomes. A multimodality imaging specialist, she performs cardiac MRI, CT, transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, as well as fetal echocardiography. Dr. Farooqi has authored numerous peer-reviewed manuscripts and is frequently invited to lecture nationally and internationally on 3D modeling, coronary imaging, and academic mentorship.
