P3 Silicones: Real Silicone Performance. Now 3D Printable

P3 Silicon
P3_DLP_Silicon_GyroidSphere

Manufacturers had traditionally to choose between the proven performance of molded silicone and the design freedom, speed, and iteration advantages of 3D printing.

P3™ Silicones remove that tradeoff by enabling functional silicone parts to be printed directly on Origin systems without conventional tooling.

Engineered by Stratasys and Shin-Etsu, P3™ Silicones combine the material characteristics of silicone with the accuracy, fine-feature capability, and manufacturing flexibility of the Origin platform.

The result is a family of materials designed for applications where elasticity, durability, surface quality, and long-term functional performance matter.

Engineered to Perform Over Time.

Engineers specify silicone for components that must maintain elasticity, sealing force, and durability through repeated compression, vibration, and environmental exposure.

But initial material properties tell only part of the story. A seal that hardens over time may lose its ability to conform and seal. A flexible component that loses elongation may become more susceptible to cracking or failure. That is why long-term property retention matters.

P3™ Silicones have been evaluated using mechanical, thermal-aging, and compression-set testing to characterize how their properties change under demanding conditions.

Thermal Aging Performance

Thermal aging can change the mechanical properties of silicone and other elastomers, directly affecting their functional performance and potential service life.

After 1,000 hours at 150°C (300°F), P3™ Silicone 25A retained substantially more of its original mechanical properties than the alternative commercially available 3D printing silicone tested.

After 1,000 hours at 150°C:

  • Hardness: 22A → 27A vs. 42A → 72A
  • Elongation at break: 672% → 376% vs. 192% → 19%
  • Tensile strength: 5.8 → 5.1 MPa vs. 6.4 → 1.9 MPa
  • Tear strength: 18 → 15 kN/m

Low Compression Set for Sealing Applications

Compression set indicates how well an elastomer recovers after prolonged compression, making it an important consideration for seals, gaskets, O-rings, cushioning, and damping components.

Tested using ASTM D395 Method B protocols, P3™ Silicone 25A and P3™ MED Silicone 25A demonstrate compression-set values of 6% and 7%, respectively. P3™ Silicone 25A also maintains stable compression-set performance following extended thermal aging at 150°C (300°F), including testing after 500 and 1,000 hours.

FAQs

Like other silicone elastomers, P3™ Silicone can harden during prolonged heat exposure. In thermal-aging testing, P3™ Silicone 25A increased from 22A to 27A after 1,000 hours at 150°C (300°F), while the alternative 3D printing silicone tested increased from 42A to 72A.

After 1,000 hours at 150°C (300°F), P3™ Silicone 25A showed changes in hardness, elongation, tensile strength, and tear strength, while retaining significantly more of its original properties than the alternative 3D printing silicone tested.

P3™ Silicone 25A and P3™ MED Silicone 25A demonstrate compression-set values of 6% and 7%, respectively, when tested using ASTM D395 Method B protocols. Low compression set is important for applications such as seals and gaskets because it indicates a material's ability to recover after prolonged compression and continue conforming to mating surfaces. P3™ Silicone 25A was tested after 500 and 1,000 hours of thermal aging at 150°C (300°F), demonstrating stable compression-set performance over time.

P3™ Silicones provide key mechanical characteristics associated with conventional silicone elastomers, including high elongation, tear resistance, low compression set, and long-term property retention. These properties enable parts to be produced directly through additive manufacturing without conventional tooling.

Because molded silicones span a very broad range of formulations, hardnesses, and performance profiles, direct comparisons should be made against the requirements and reference material for the specific application.

Select the material based on your application's requirements. Choose P3™ MED Silicone 25A when its ISO 10993 biocompatibility testing is relevant to the application. Choose P3™ Silicone 25A when its UL 94 V-0 flame-retardance rating is required. Where these requirements do not determine material selection, consider mechanical properties, color, and other application-specific requirements.

P3™ Silicones have a stated temperature range of -50°C to +200°C (-58°F to 392°F).

P3™ MED Silicone 25A has been evaluated for biocompatibility to ISO 10993-5, ISO 10993-10, and ISO 10993-23. P3™ Silicone 25A is rated UL 94 V-0 at 2.56 mm.

No. P3™ Silicones are single-component materials and do not require mixing. Both materials have a stated shelf life of 12 months when stored according to the recommended storage conditions.

Printable feature size varies between 0.2 – 13mm. depending on the feature, geometry and orientation. Please consult the respective Material Datasheets for the complete overview:
