Manufacturers had traditionally to choose between the proven performance of molded silicone and the design freedom, speed, and iteration advantages of 3D printing.
P3™ Silicones remove that tradeoff by enabling functional silicone parts to be printed directly on Origin systems without conventional tooling.
Engineered by Stratasys and Shin-Etsu, P3™ Silicones combine the material characteristics of silicone with the accuracy, fine-feature capability, and manufacturing flexibility of the Origin platform.
The result is a family of materials designed for applications where elasticity, durability, surface quality, and long-term functional performance matter.
Engineers specify silicone for components that must maintain elasticity, sealing force, and durability through repeated compression, vibration, and environmental exposure.
But initial material properties tell only part of the story. A seal that hardens over time may lose its ability to conform and seal. A flexible component that loses elongation may become more susceptible to cracking or failure. That is why long-term property retention matters.
P3™ Silicones have been evaluated using mechanical, thermal-aging, and compression-set testing to characterize how their properties change under demanding conditions.
Thermal aging can change the mechanical properties of silicone and other elastomers, directly affecting their functional performance and potential service life.
After 1,000 hours at 150°C (300°F), P3™ Silicone 25A retained substantially more of its original mechanical properties than the alternative commercially available 3D printing silicone tested.
Compression set indicates how well an elastomer recovers after prolonged compression, making it an important consideration for seals, gaskets, O-rings, cushioning, and damping components.
Tested using ASTM D395 Method B protocols, P3™ Silicone 25A and P3™ MED Silicone 25A demonstrate compression-set values of 6% and 7%, respectively. P3™ Silicone 25A also maintains stable compression-set performance following extended thermal aging at 150°C (300°F), including testing after 500 and 1,000 hours.
Both materials offer 25A Shore A hardness, but differ in mechanical properties, color, and application-specific qualifications.
