The Use of 3D Printed Models to Plan Complex Endovascular AAA Repair Procedures

Understanding the anatomy of a complex abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is essential. Precise geometry of the aorta and distances between the aneurysm and branch vessels can be difficult to appreciate from computed tomography (CT) scans and CT 3D reconstructions alone.

Interventional cardiologists have come to rely upon 3D printed models to understand these critical spatial relationships for optimal preoperative planning to ensure safer, more cost-effective outcomes.

This white paper shares the Jacobs Institute’s experience with using 3D printed models to help surgeons plan for five challenging AAA cases at Kaleida Health’s Gates Vascular Institute. The models helped increase their self confidence in performing the actual surgery.
