Demonstration of Additive Manufacturing (FDM) for Production Composite Tooling for Dassault Falcon Jet
How viable is using fused deposition modeling (FDM) technology for more than development tooling in the aerospace industry? The Manufacturing Tooling team at the Completion Center for Dassault Falcon Jet and the Composite Solutions team at Stratasys teamed up to find out.
FDM has consistently demonstrated its value for producing prototype or development tooling, repair tooling and master patterns to produce final production tooling. Now the two teams work to demonstrate the viability of FDM for production-grade tooling – from lay-up molds to machining fixtures. This paper outlines the development and evaluation effort from the initial design phases through final composite part production and provides associated results and lessons learned – and ends with Dassault Falcon Jet expanding its own use of FDM technology.
