Create realistic models based on patient scans

Realistic 3D printed anatomical models can facilitate:

  • Patient-specific surgical planning
  • Sophisticated training simulations
  • Preclinical device testing on relevant anatomy

Developing these models can be a challenge; one starting point is to use data readily available in the form of MRI, CT, or 3D ultrasound information. With patient data, model designers can recreate the complexity of any disease, abnormal anatomy or variation in the natural world. Models can be 3D printed onsite or sent to a service bureau.

This how-to guide covers segmentation of anatomy and STL editing using the software tools InVesalius and Materialise Magics; the process can be replicated with many available solutions.
