Additive manufacturing’s digital makeup offers numerous advantages. But it also poses a security risk, much like any other digitally based system. Although Stratasys printers already incorporate security protocols, for some critical applications, customers want enhanced measures to thwart the risk of a data breach.

To meet that need Stratasys has introduced ProtectAM, a data security solution designed to provide additional additive manufacturing information safeguards. ProtectAM will roll out on FDM printers, the first being the Fortus 450mc. As an umbrella security platform, ProtectAM will incorporate distinct software solutions tailored for specific security objectives.

The first such solution uses Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), the world’s leading enterprise Linux platform, to help deliver continuous information processing security features required by U.S. government agencies. Specifically, RHEL will enable Stratasys customers to comply with Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIG), issued by the Defense Information System Agency (DISA) of the U.S. Department of Defense. STIGs are documents that provide methodologies used to “harden” information systems and software against cyber attack.

Stratasys chose Red Hat for this particular data security solution because of its leadership in this capability as well as its superior differentiation from other security offerings. For example, Red Hat Enterprise Linux is validated by Federal Information Processing Standard 140-2 (FIPS 140-2), a benchmark security standard within governmental agencies. Red Hat Enterprise Linux has also achieved Common Criteria certification, an international standard for computer security.

ProtectAM with Red Hat Enterprise Linux is slated to be added to the F900 printer later this year. That will be followed by the F770 and F370 by Q2 2022, giving most FDM printers data security capabilities consistent with STIG requirements.
