Discover four key solutions we provide for all customers looking for Direct Metal Laser Melting (DMLM) 3D printing services.
With metal additive manufacturing experience since 2012, we know that the process can be complex and bring up a lot of questions. You may know metal AM as DMLS (Direct Metal Laser Sintering) or DMLM. You can read our break down of the difference at the link here.
When you’re starting a project that incorporates DMLM 3D printing, you may be concerned about fitting in your process specifications, how to reduce costs, or maybe your team needs help from the ground up. That’s where our customized solutions come in. In the following we explain four solutions for you as you embark on your journey to beautiful DMLM 3D printed parts.
This is our DMLM solution for prototypes without all the frills. Metal 3D printing produces complex geometries in one fluid build with high-strength metal alloys while still leveraging the speed you need for rapid prototyping.
In some instances, DMLM parts require stress relief depending on the material. In addition to DMLM Essentials, we offer DMLM Essentials+SR, 3D printing solution which offers in-house, non-certified stress relief to help mitigate any deformation.
Materials available for DMLM Essentials include Stainless Steel 17-4, Cobalt Chrome CoCrMo, and Nickel Alloy 625. With DMLM Essentials+SR, you can 3D print Aluminum (AlSi10Mg), Stainless Steel 316L, Cobalt Chrome (CoCrMo) and Nickel Alloy 625.
Customers utilizing DMLM Essentials have made fiberoptic guides, fairings, housings and transducers.

The Additive Metal Process (A.M.P.) Specification solution was created to help you get production metal parts even if you don’t have process and/or material specifications laid out yet. Without needing any legwork from you, we can provide confidence with our proof of process, traceability and quality controls for your high-requirements projects. Our A.M.P. specs provide assurance for your team that what is built today will be precisely duplicated in the future.
Stratasys Direct’s DMLM A.M.P specifications control things like machine software, how updates are controlled, and how customer data is to be used. Machine qualification contains things like maintenance records, how often laser power must be checked, laser beam profile, scanner calibration and records, and sample build qualification. The handling of powder handling is tightly controlled 100% traceable and recorded, and build plates are sterilized and must meet certain checks and measures before use. Additionally, machine recoater blades and machine air filters are inspected before each use. The spec even goes on to discuss part handling and places the facility under air quality assurances such as humidity control and accurate record keeping.
Materials available with this solution include Stainless Steel 17-4 & 316L, Aluminum (AlSi10Mg), Titanium (Ti64), Cobalt Chrome CoCrMo, and Nickel Alloy 625 & 718, Nickel Alloy K500 and Copper (C18150).
Customer have worked with us to make turbo pump housings, guides, manifolds, and rocket nozzles.

This solution was developed for the customer who is ready with process and/or material specifications. It puts you in the driver’s seat when it comes to your statement of work and process, material and/or material specifications. These types of projects are the language we speak at Stratasys Direct and are the most prevalent types of jobs we manufacture.
Materials available with this solution include Aluminum (AlSi10Mg), Stainless Steel 17-4 & 316L, Titanium (Ti64), Cobalt Chrome CoCrMo, and Nickel Alloy 625 & 718, Nickel Alloy K500 and Copper (C18150).
We receive process specifications and work with customers to develop applications like air foils, vanes, bearing races and fuel injectors.

There are some projects that require innovation, and at Stratasys Direct, we’re ready to push the boundaries of what DMLM 3D printing can do. When your idea is innovative, you need a team with the resources and determination to toss aside the rulebook and work with you to find unique solutions. That’s what DMLM Discover is for – a place for us to work with you to create or characterize new materials or advanced designs that require customer parameters and often trial and error to achieve incredible results.
With this solution, you have access to materials akin to Invar® 36, Kovar®, Hastelloy® X, and other metals including Copper (GrCop84), 4140 Steel, Nickel Alloy 939.
We’ve worked with top companies to create unique projects including antennas, mirrors, tanks, tools and chassis. One great example of our collaborative efforts was when we worked with aerospace companies to develop Copper C18150 (CuCr1Zr) on DMLM systems for thermal control applications in aerospace.

To help further illustrate how these four solutions can best serve your next project, we’ve provided to example scenarios.
An engineer at an automotive company wants to leverage the benefits of 3D printing to develop functional prototypes. The project includes prototyping two lightweight axle-pivots for the purpose to quickly test the fit and function of their design. The engineer does not need to qualify the parts or material and is focused on a quick turnaround in order to speed up the testing process.
This engineer’s project is best suited for DMLM Essentials since he does not require spec work or need to qualify the process.
Developers at an aerospace company want to explore the feasibility of implementing DMLM to manufacture liquid rocket engine (LRE) components. The team needs to the metal parts to be made with Nickel Alloy K500, a material that does not exist yet for additive manufacturing. With ideas and some research, the team is looking for experts in metal 3D printing to establish proper process parameters and material property for additive Nickel Alloy K500 and help design a preburner that could be additively manufactured.
This team’s project is best suited for DMLM Discover where engineers and material experts at Stratasys Direct can help build upon their research and develop the material specs and designs before executing builds.
